Immediately following the public program, “The Legacy of America’s Longest War,” Sponsor-level members of the Council and above are invited to “Continue the Conversation” in an exclusive, off-the-record setting with Senior Fellow Elizabeth Shackelford, Public Opinion expert Craig Kafura and other Council experts to dive deeper into the current realities in Afghanistan. 

This discussion will take the conversation one step further with exclusive insight on what’s happening on the ground, as well as the opportunity to see new public opinion data on the situation from Council experts. Exchange thoughts with other members and get your questions answered on the US’s past and present role in Afghan affairs.

Elizabeth Shackelford, a former career diplomat who served the US Mission to Somalia and the US Embassy in South Sudan, focuses on building awareness and understanding of a "restraint" approach to foreign policy, which seeks to limit the use of force to core US security interests and favors diplomatic engagement.

Assistant Director, Public Opinion and Foreign Policy
Craig Kafura is the assistant director for public opinion and foreign policy at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, a Security Fellow with the Truman National Security Project, and a Pacific Forum Young Leader. At the Council, he coordinates work on public opinion and foreign policy and is a regular contributor to the public opinion and foreign policy blog Running Numbers.
Chet Lee
Former US Navy Federal Executive Fellow

Chet Lee was the 2021-2022 Navy Federal Executive Fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs' Lester Crown Center. As a career Naval Officer, he has deployed to the Middle East, South America, and Asia. He recently served at the United States Embassy in New Delhi, India, directing US Navy and Indian Navy cooperative efforts.
