Hong Kong and the Future of One Country, Two Systems

Clashes in Hong Kong between protesters and security forces in riot gear have captured the world’s attention. For months now, Hong Kong residents have taken to the streets in the hundreds of thousands to demonstrate for greater autonomy and political freedom from mainland China. Yet Beijing’s stance toward Hong Kong has not appeared to change, even as many now question the future of the “one country, two systems” policy. With the growing waves of protest, and with no end in sight, what can these massive demonstrations tell us about where this metropolis is heading? And what is China’s endgame with Hong Kong?
