Yongding Yu is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS); member of National People’s Political Consultative Conference (NPPCC); member of Committee of Foreign Affairs of NPPCC; member of Advisory Committee of National Planning of the National Development and Reform Committee of the PRC; member of Advisory Committee of Foreign Policy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC; member of Advisory Group of APD IMF; and editor-in-chief of China and World Economy.
He was director-general of the Institute of World Economics and Politics (IWEP) with the CASS (1998-2009); president of China Society of World Economy (2003-2011); and member of the Monetary Policy Committee of People’s Bank of China (2004-2006).
Dr. Yu was born in Jiangsu province in 1948. He graduated from the Beijing School of Science and Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1969 and worked as an electrician at the Beijing Heavy Machinery Factory from 1969-1979 (during the “Cultural Revolution” period). He joined the Institute of World Economics and Politics in 1979 and was appointed as research fellow (1983), head of the research department (1986), senior research fellow (1987) and senior fellow (1995). He received his MA in economics from the graduate school of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (1986), and D.Phil. in economics from the University of Oxford (1994).
Dr. Yu’s main research areas are macroeconomics, international finance, and world economics. He has authored and coauthored more than 10 books, and published numerous papers and articles in various academic journals and newspapers. He is a regular contributor to Project Syndicate.
The main organizations, where he served or is still serving as a member of board, include: UN commission of the Reform of the International Financial and Monetary System (Stiglitz commission); UN Committee of Development Policy; Council on Reform of International Economic Policy (Brookings); Advisory Committee of World Economic Symposium of Kiel Institute of World Economy; Council of Global Governance, Davos World Economic Forum; Advisory Committee of the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET); Académie Hassan II des Sciences et Techniques, Royaume du Maroc; Advisory Board of the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI); and The Bretton Woods Committee.

Dr. Yu was the 2013 Dr. Scholl Foundation Visiting Fellow on US-China Relations at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.
