Across the world today, thousands of individuals languish in prison for criticizing governments or for belonging to banned, persecuted, or opposition groups, and are often denied basic guarantees endowed by Human Rights Conventions. While such injustice has always existed, a global rollback of democracy in recent years coupled with new forms of government surveillance threaten to increase global rates of political incarceration. Members of the Council’s Young Professionals Network are invited to discuss the plight of today’s political prisoners with Daphne Eviatar of Amnesty International. Through an interactive salon-style conversation, Daphne and YPs will examine who these prisoners are, why they are detained, and what hope there is for their release.
