VIRTUAL: President's Club Conversation on State Bankruptcy and Economic Health

Richard Porter, Partner, Kirkland & Ellis; Kam Buckner, 26th District State Representative, Illinois House of Representatives. Moderated by Cécile Shea.

As state and local economies continue to be deeply affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, governors are requesting billions of dollars in aid from the federal government. Yet some political leaders are proposing additional options for states regarding their financial situations. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell recently suggested that states should be allowed to declare bankruptcy, though Congress would need to pass legislation to allow this to happen. Is state bankruptcy a viable option to improve states’ financial health, or would it lead to greater financial distress? What is the likelihood of Congress passing legislation to allow states to declare bankruptcy? President’s Club members and above are invited to an exclusive off-the-record Zoom discussion with Richard Porter and State Representative Kam Buckner as they discuss the economic health of states.
