The Value of Mateship: A US-Australia Relationship for the 21st Century

Australia and the United States have long been “mates”; friends and strategic allies who share democratic values, economic interests and a keen focus on national security and maintaining global prosperity and stability, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. As the two countries stand on the cusp of celebrating a centenary of military cooperation, the relationship continues to evolve and adapt, especially in light of continued immense growth in the Asia-Pacific region and the new Trump Administration’s approach to international trade as evidenced by their recent withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Given its role as both a longstanding US ally and location in the fastest growing region in the world, Australia is uniquely positioned to assess the implications of these changes and forge a way forward with the US in the region.
