There have always been competing interpretations of the truth, but today it seems as if there are competing realities. In recent years, countries across the West have been targeted by disinformation campaigns designed to make their citizens question whether the information they consume from the news media is accurate or legitimate. The control of information has long been a hallmark of authoritarian regimes, but today almost anyone can sow discord among populations with social media, dark ads, psy-ops, hacks, and bots. Peter Pomerantsev, visiting senior fellow at the London School of Economics, asks who modern democracies are fighting and how they should conduct these information wars.
Copies of Pomerantsev’s latest book, This is Not Propaganda: Adventures in the War Against Reality will be available for sale and signing from the Book Cellar.
