With a combined GDP of more than $2.2 trillion and a population of 620 million people, the ten member states of Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) represent a power bloc of critical economic and geostrategic importance to the United States. Spanning more than 1.7 million square miles across vital sea lanes and trade routes, ASEAN is the third-largest Asian trading partner of the United States—after China and Japan—and the largest destination for US investment in Asia. Given the importance of this relationship, it is notable that the US-ASEAN Defense Forum was the first stop on Secretary of Defense Hagel’s most recent trip to the Asia Pacific. Join The Chicago Council on Global Affairs for a unique program and lunch with ambassadors of the ASEAN nations to the US.
