Gender imbalance pervades many workplaces, and nowhere more so than in the STEM fields. Despite this, women have been at the forefront of major technological breakthroughs. From NASA’s Hidden Figures who helped win the space race, to the courageous all-girl Afghan Robotics team, women and girls are harnessing tech to change the world. What barriers have traditionally held women back from careers in STEM? How can men support women and drive tech equality? How is tech being used as a force for social good? Emily Church

Director of Strategy and Impact, XPRIZE

Emily Musil Church is a strategist and thought leader in harnessing technology to address global challenges for social good. In this role, she directs the impact work for the Global Learning XPRIZE, where she bridges the worlds of research, innovation, and global development. Prior to joining XPRIZE, Church spent over a decade in academia where as a professor she specialized in African history, human rights, and women’s global issues. She has consulted for a number of non-profit organizations including the USC Shoah Foundation and Nomadic Church has a PhD and a MA from UCLA. She won a Fulbright-Hays Research Fellowship and has conducted in-depth research in over a dozen countries on three continents. She has served as a Judge for the Gleitsman International Activist Award for the Harvard University Kennedy School’s Center for Public Leadership and serves on the OECD’s Senior Advisory Group for Blended Finance.

Roya Mahboob

Founder and Executive Director, Digital Citizen Fund

Roya Mahboob is the founder and executive director of Digital Citizen Fund and CEO of Afghan Citadel Software Company. Mahboob aims to increase women’s technological literacy and provide employment and education opportunities for girls and children in developing countries like Afghanistan. Her digital literacy program, a part of the curriculum at Digital Citizen Fund, seeks to bridge the gap between education and job markets by offering practical online skills through Mahboob’s new company and platform, EdyEdy. Because of her work in building internet classrooms in high schools in Afghanistan, Mahboob was named a part of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World 2013. Mahboob is also a member of the 2014 Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Awards, Civic Innovators, The Advancement of Gender Equality through Education Award, and Young Leader of World Economic Form in 2015.

Brad Keywell

Cofounder and CEO, Uptake

Brad Keywell a lifelong entrepreneur and the co-founder and CEO of Chicago-based Uptake, the leading predictive analytics software company for industry. Brad also cofounded over 15 companies, including Groupon, Echo Global logistics, and MediaOcean, as well as the technology startup venture fund Lightbank. A Midwest native, Brad is a vocal advocate for the region's entrepreneurial and tech communities. He is founder and co-chairman of Chicago Ideas, the chairman of the Future Founders Foundation, and formerly served as chairman of the Illinois Innovation Council. He has been recognized as an Entrepreneurial Champion by the Chicagoland Entrepreneurial Center and currently teaches a course at the University of Chicago Booth School Of Business on entrepreneurship and disruptive technology.
