Counterfeiting: The War Against Fake Goods

Michael Ellis, Assistant Director, Trafficking in Illicit Goods and Counterfeiting Sub-Directorate, INTERPOL; Brian Monks, Vice President, Anti-Counterfeiting Operations, UL. Moderated by Niamh King.

From fake iPhones to phony Chateau Petrus, international criminal organizations are increasingly turning to counterfeiting on an industrial scale to fund their illicit activities. With high profits and a low risk of significant legal consequences, the thriving multibillion dollar global trade not only robs companies of their intellectual property, but also places the health, safety, finances, and even the jobs of often unsuspecting consumers at risk. With a seemingly unstoppable surge of fake goods hitting global markets, what mechanisms are available to help roll back the tide of counterfeiting? As part of the Council’s ongoing series on crime and punishment, join us for a look into the murky realm of international criminal counterfeiting enterprises and the vast efforts of those in law enforcement and private industry to combat them.
