A Comedian and a Journalist Walk into a Newsroom

Caty Borum Chattoo, Executive Director, Center for Media & Social Impact, American University; Jason Zinoman, Comedy Columnist, New York Times. Moderated by Anne Libera.

In this critical election year, millions of Americans will learn about the big political stories of the day from…comedians. At a time when thousands of journalism jobs are being cut and media outlets cite public disinterest for trimming international coverage, the success of several current affairs-focused comedy shows proves that there is still an audience for hard news. What is driving the popularity of “comedic journalism” and should we welcome or be wary of this new entertainment phenomenon? In partnership with The Second City, a panel of experts explore what the merging of comedy and news coverage tells us about our changing politics, society, and attitudes toward journalism.

Copies of Caty Borum Chattoo’s new book, A Comedian and An Activist Walk Into a Bar: The Serious Role of Comedy in Social Justice will be available for purchase and signing after the program from the Book Cellar.
