Another Word for Beauty by The Chicago Council

Colombia is home to some of the world’s grimmest prisons, and El Buen Pastor in Bogota is no exception. Since the early 1990’s, crimes committed by women have increased dramatically with more than 74,000 behind bars across Latin America. In an effort to address the unique and devastating impact incarceration has upon women, prisons across the globe are turning to a surprising program of rehabilitation—inmate beauty pageants. This winter, the Goodman Theatre explores these themes through their production of Another Word for Beauty by Academy Award nominee José Rivera. What lessons can be taken from this innovative approach to rehabilitation rather than punishment? And can it address the distinctive factors driving women to crime? Join the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and Goodman Theatre for a preview discussion and performance of Another Word for Beauty
