American Leadership at a Crossroads

James Dobbins, Distinguished Chair in Diplomacy and Security, RAND Corporation; Former US Ambassador to the European Union. In conversation with Cécile Shea.

The 2016 presidential election campaigns have presented Americans with contrasting visions of America’s future. At a time of heightened global insecurity voters must decide what role the United States should play in maintaining global order and promoting the values of international law, democracy, and free trade. While Council on Global Affairs polling reveals majorities of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents consistently support active American engagement with the world, can the nation’s political leadership find a consensus on America’s future global role? Does the campaign rhetoric indicate that America’s foreign policy priorities are changing?
