Benjamin Levy

Benjamin Levy is a gastroenterologist at Mount Sinai and Holy Cross Hospitals where he provides medical care and colonoscopy screenings for underserved patient populations in Chicago. Levy’s global interests extend to both public health and the arts. At Mount Sinai Hospital, Levy serves as the head of gastroenterology education for residents and medical students from several international medical schools. Most recently he founded a gastroenterology clinic for refugees resettling in Chicago. Currently, he serves on the American College of Gastroenterology's Patient Care Committee where he is organizing a colon cancer screening campaign. Previously, Levy created a national health education campaign, “Music Inspires Health,” which teamed up music celebrities, physicians, and public health experts. Through a grant from Panavision, he produced health education short films about HIV prevention. Using these PSAs, he worked with Kaiser Permanente to organize a national concert tour. An avid cellist,. Levy founded the Music Suppressed by the Third Reich International Conference exploring music banned in Nazi Germany while in college. He was subsequently awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to continue this research in Paris with advisors at the Sorbonne, the Bibliothèque Nationale, and the Orchestre de Paris. A native of Savannah, Georgia, Levy received a BA in music from the University of Virginia, his MD from Emory University, he completed internal medicine residency at the University of Arizona, and a gastroenterology fellowship at Louisiana State University. During his free time, he enjoys playing cello at weddings and for patients in hospice. Dr. Levy has received numerous awards for his innovative community efforts, including the Outstanding New Researcher Award at the CDC’s 2009 National HIV Prevention Conference and Hillel International’s Elie Wiesel Award for Jewish Arts and Culture. In 2013, Dr. Levy was named to Gambit magazine’s (BestofNewOrleans.com) “40 Under 40” list.
