"The reality of the matter is that what Putin wants is something we can't give him through diplomacy," Council President Ivo Daalder says on CNN with Jake Tapper and Robin Wright, Distinguished Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center.

"He wants to control Ukraine. He wants, in many ways, to reset the European security order that was agreed to after the Cold War. And in some ways he wants to end American dominance."

After a chaotic day of communication over troops in the region, President Biden is tasked with explaining to both Vladimir Putin and the American people why they should care about freedom.

"It seems to be that [Putin] wants to threaten us into unilateral surrender, and Biden went out today and said it's not going to happen. It will be a very costly mistake if Putin continues to threaten and further invade Ukraine, and we're ready for that. And that was a statement we needed to hear," argues Council President Daalder.
