Douglas Bereuter, cochair of the Council’s Global Agricultural Development Initiative and president emeritus of The Asia Foundation, delivered the keynote speech at USAID’s Farmer-to-Farmer 30th Anniversary Learning event today. As one of the founders of the Farmer-to-Farmer Program, Bereuter spoke on the organization’s beginnings, as well as its continuing role in improving agricultural livelihoods.
For three decades, Farmer-to-Farmer has promoted sustainable development, food security, and economic growth in over 110 countries through the volunteer efforts of US farmers and members of agribusinesses, cooperatives, and universities. Funded by the US Farm Bill, the program “promotes international goodwill, understanding of US foreign assistance programs, and private investment in development activities.”

The Global Food and Agriculture Program aims to inform the development of US policy on global agricultural development and food security by raising awareness and providing resources, information, and policy analysis to the US Administration, Congress, and interested experts and organizations.
