Give Women and Girls the Chance to Rebuild Lives, Livelihoods
This International Women’s Day some 75 million women and children are caught in humanitarian crises, according to the Women’s Refugee Commission. Respecting their rights and needs should be at the center of humanitarian action—yet Gender Equality programming is too often a box-ticking exercise. By putting women and girls at the center of the World Humanitarian Summit, we can realize the potential of women and girls to rebuild lives and livelihoods.

Farmers Don't Try New Things Because It's Too Risky. This Could Change That
The problem with revolutionary ideas for farming is that many of them don’t live up to their promises—when something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. And if a new tool fails to work, and decreases a farm’s productivity just a little bit, it’s likely to turn profits into losses. Every time a farmer tries a gizmo that messes with their yields they are laying a year’s wages on the roulette table. Providing solid evidence that something works is the key.

Slice The Price Of Fruits And Veggies, Save 200,000 Lives?
Lowering the price of fruits and vegetables by 30% can save nearly 200,000 lives over 15 years. That's the message being touted by researchers at the American Heart Association's Epidemiology meeting. Computer models suggest that making produce more affordable may actually translate into lower death rates from heart disease and stroke.

How to Get Kids to Kick Their Sugar Habit
Sugar has been shown to have an effect similar to an addictive drug, and many kids are in fact addicted to it. Some ways to help kids cut back include preventing unrelated cravings from low blood sugar and thirst, avoiding soft drinks and sports drinks, and supporting children when they make good choices.

Fog Collectors Net Scarce Water in Kenya, but Face a Cloudy Future
Fog collection is one of the cheapest and most environmentally friendly ways of collecting clean water. A new project, set up at a Kenyan primary school, aims to test the viability of harvesting fog to help provide a safe and reliable source of water in water-scarce areas. If built at scale, fog collections could help unlock the economic potential of dry but fertile areas by providing water for irrigation and livestock as well as for families.
