POSITION: Social Media Officer
TEAM: Communications
REPORTS TO: Assistant Director, Digital Marketing and Design


The Social Media Officer is responsible for expanding the Council’s audiences primarily across Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram through innovative, engaging, and data-driven social media content and campaigns. S/he also plans, executes, and analyzes digital advertising efforts to support the strategic plans and goals of various teams throughout the Council. The Social Media Officer reports to the Assistant Director of Digital Marketing and Design and works collaboratively with others on the digital communications team to advance the Council’s mission of exploring ideas that will shape our global future and promoting active US engagement in the world.


  • Develop and maintain the Council’s social media “voice” to grow, engage, and leverage audiences across Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram 
  • Develop and integrate long-term organic and paid social media strategies into digital communications and marketing plans while managing day-to-day social media content and audience engagement 
  • Manage and execute paid social campaigns and digital advertising (Google Adwords), including bid management, keyword research, specific country targeting, and optimizing campaigns with text for ads, etc.
  • Develop creative copy, assets, images, and graphics to be used in campaigns
  • Manage the Council’s use of Sprout Social and guide teams throughout the Council to use it to communicate with audiences in clear, simple, relatable terms 
  • Work with multiple stakeholders – teams and individuals throughout the Council – and develop social media trainings to devise and execute strategies for amplifying the Council’s messaging 
  • Work with the assistant director of digital marketing and analytics to track and analyze data, develop reports, and share learnings and insights 
  • Stay up to date on the latest social media trends and tools and explore expansion into any potential new platforms 
  • Occasionally assist at Council events managing media, live streaming or live tweeting, supporting registration, ushering, etc. requiring some evening and early morning hours
  • Occasionally assist at the front desk to relieve the Reception and Database Services Assistant in meeting/greeting Council constituents and handling incoming calls 
  • Perform other projects as assigned


  • 3+ years of experience executing creative, effective social media campaigns that resulted in growth and engagement while executing day-to-day community management for significantly sized social media audiences; 
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in marketing, advertising, communications, or business
  • Experience with various social media management and listening tools 
  • Solid understanding of Facebook Ads Manager, Twitter’s ads platform, and Google Ads execution and management, including both search (bid management, keyword research) and display network (remarketing, contextual advertising) 
  • Ability to write for digital audiences
  • Experience working at a nonprofit or managing a nonprofit portfolio is a plus 
  • Creative content skills including graphic design and video editing are a major plus 
  • Ability to turn concepts and ideas into reality quickly and with limited resources
  • Ability to balance competing priorities and needs, with a diplomatic approach to engaging with other nondigital staff as partners and to identify solutions that meet multiple stakeholders’ need
