The Augustin “Gus” Hart Visiting Fellowship was established in honor of Mr. Hart, former chairman and longtime member of the Council’s board of directors. Gus Hart had a distinguished career at Quaker Oats, building the international division of that company before retiring as vice chairman in 1980. Mr. Hart also had a lifelong interest in Latin America and served as chairman of the board of the InterAmerican Foundation.

The Hart Visiting Fellowship is awarded biennially to an exceptional young leader from Latin America who is making a significant contribution to the advancement of his or her society and enhancing its role in global affairs from his/her position in the economic, private enterprise, governmental, academic, social, or cultural realm. The Hart Fellow is invited to the Council for one week, and through a wide range of interactions with business, civil society, and academic leaders in Chicago, they help strengthen understanding and ties between Chicago and Latin America.
