The relationship between women and development is central to discussions around global health, international development assistance, and the socioeconomic challenges that women face around the world. Women are the most reliable and innovative recipients of microfinance, their health is essential to the survival of families, and increased opportunities for women have been shown to lift entire communities out of poverty. Over the past several years, The Chicago Council has hosted notable women who have demonstrated a deep commitment to women’s issues, including Adrienne Germain, president of the International Women’s Health Coalition; and Sakena Yacoobi, president and executive director of the Afghan Institute of Learning.
In fall 2009, the Council established the Women and Global Development Forum to further explore the central role of women in international development efforts by governments, NGOs, philanthropies, and businesses.
