Decision Regarding Program with Mearsheimer and Walt

August 16, 2007

August 16, 2007 - The Chicago Council on Global Affairs recently cancelled a program with professors John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt, which had not been publicly announced but was being planned for late September.

The Chicago Council frequently provides a forum for the discussion of controversial topics. In this case, the Council intended to develop a thoughtful airing of diverse views about the issues raised in their forthcoming book, The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy.  A September appearance by the authors was inadvertently scheduled through their publisher before we had our preferred format in place.  We were subsequently unable to frame a program that would include other perspectives in time to meet that schedule.  As a result, we reluctantly decided that we could not proceed with the September program and advised the authors of this decision.

The Chicago Council continues to work to create an appropriate program on the issues raised by professors Mearsheimer and Walt.
