Eighteen years into the 21st Century, it is time to re-evaluate what has been called the age of Asia. Following the rise of populism and anti-globalization movements in the west, Asia has every opportunity to become the well-oiled, policy-defining voice in the world. But Asia has its challenges too. China’s economic growth is decelerating, territorial disputes are escalating, and many Asian nations face impending environmental and demographic crises. Michael Auslin, Karl Friedhoff, and Deborah Lehr join Phil Levy to discuss whether we are truly in an Asian century, and the Council on Global Affairs will further the discussion with new public opinion data collected in countries throughout the Pacific exploring regional perspectives on global engagement.
