Shehzad Roy, President and Founder of the Zindagi Trust, Pakistani Pop Star, and the 2009 Patricia Blunt Koldyke Fellow in Social Entrepreneurship

Shehzad RoyShehzad Roy, the 2009 Patricia Blunt Koldyke Fellow in Social Entrepreneurship, will discuss the Zindagi Trust, the organization he founded dedicated to improving primary and secondary education in Pakistan. The Trust’s core mission is to provide all children in Pakistan with access to quality education as part of a broader vision that seeks to combat illiteracy in the country. Through his work for the Trust, Roy, who believes that the status quo is unacceptable, has successfully reformed government schools while advocating that every child has a fundamental right to quality education. No difference makes all the difference with regard to the equitable education of Pakistan’s children.

Shehzad Roy, native to Karachi, is an award-winning musician, performer, and philanthropist who uses his popularity to advance the cause of underprivileged youth in Pakistan. In 2002, he established the Zindagi Trust, which strives to educate the children of Pakistan and provide them with equal and equitable access to schooling. A full-time musician, Roy has completed five albums which are inspired by his humanitarian work and also help underwrite Zindagi Trust through the proceeds of his concerts. In 2004, Roy was honored as one of the youngest recipients of the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, the highest civil honor awarded in Pakistan, for excellence in serving humanity. For his organization’s role in earthquake rehabilitation in Kashmir, he was awarded the Sitara-e-Eisaar, a national recognition for altruism. In 2008, he was selected to be a torch bearer for the Olympic Torch relay in Beijing.

The Chicago Council’s Patricia Blunt Koldyke Fellowship in Social Entrepreneurship is funded by the Koldyke family to recognize a leading social entrepreneur from any region of the world who is working in the economic, education, health, government, development, media, or cultural realm.
