GOVERNANCE IN SOMALIA: CHALLENGES AND PRIORITIES

Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, President of Somalia

After nearly two decades of civil war, Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government, led by President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, is working toward building peace and the possibility of progress.  The challenge that lies ahead is transforming a country that has been entangled with fighting between rival warlords and gripped with famine and disease. Join us for this evening lecture with the president as he shares his vision for bringing stability to Somalia and his efforts to leverage the international community to rebuild civil society and enact measures to face violent extremism.

Sheik Sharif Sheik AhmedSheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed was elected president of Somalia on January 31, 2009. He currently oversees the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia, which is the international recognized government coalition, formed with the backing of the United States and the United Nations. Prior to becoming president, he was the leader of the Alliance for Re-liberation of Somalia and former chief executive of the Islamic Courts Union. In 2001, Sharif delved into politics as he became instrumental in establishing a court system to maintain municipal law and order.
