Getting China and India Right

Anil K. Gupta, Ralph J. Tyser Professor of Strategy and Organization, Robert H. Smith School of Business, The University of Maryland

Anil K. GuptaOperating in China and India is not the same as “getting it right.” Companies must develop long-term strategies and see both countries as engines for global growth, rather than just vehicles for cost savings. With the global recession now causing companies to rethink their international strategies, much can be learned from those who have and are still succeeding in these economic giants. Anil K. Gupta is the coauthor of the book Getting China and India Right: Strategies for Leveraging the World’s Fastest Growing Economies for Global Advantage, scheduled for release in mid-February. Gupta and Haiyan Wang interviewed managers in more than 100 companies to discern effective strategies for operating in China and India, including labor market branding, building technology and innovation hubs, and tapping multisegment “mega-markets.”

Anil K. Gupta is the Ralph J. Tyser Professor of Strategy and Organization at the Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland at College Park. The recipient of numerous awards for excellence in research and teaching, he has been recognized by BusinessWeek as an outstanding faculty member in its “Guide to the Best B-Schools,” inducted into the Academy of Management Journals’ Hall of Fame, and ranked by Management International Review as one of the “Top 20 North American Superstars” for research in strategy and organization. Gupta is the author of over seventy papers and four books, and earned his Doctor of Business Administration from the Harvard Business School.

“Getting China and India Right is the best source of insight available for executives….The authors of this book are among the world's masters on the subject of global strategy in the new age of China and India. We have benefited from their insights. If you were to read only one book on this subject this year, this should be it. A real tour de force."
-Graham Mackay, Chief Executive Officer, SABMiller plc

“This book draws out the strengths of the economies of China and India and offers a blueprint to companies on how to draw up strategies to best approach the two economies for the long term."
