THE GLOBAL ECONOMY - FALL 2009 SERIES
PART II
THIS EVENT HAS BEEN SOLD OUT. WALK-IN REGISTRATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
SUPERFREAKONOMICS!
Steven D. Levitt, William B. Ogden Distinguished Service Professor in Economics, University of Chicago
In the second part of a three-part public program series on the global economy, economist and author Steven Levitt will tackle a host of issues at the very center of modern society: terrorism, global warming, altruism, and more. From the rarefied corridors of academia to the grimiest street corners, Levitt lets his numbers speak the truth, asserting that a single mountain in the Philippines has had a greater impact on global warming than Nobel laureate Al Gore, while questioning common notions, such as the idea that terrorists come from poor families and are poorly educated. Inspired by engineers and astrophysicists, realtors and pimps, amateur historians and transgender neuroscientists, Levitt will examine the complex and often surprising nature of human behavior—delving into the hidden agendas of nearly every individual and the incentives that drive them.
Steven D. Levitt is the William B. Ogden Distinguished Service Professor in Economics at the University of Chicago, where he is also director of The Becker Center on Chicago Price Theory. In 2004, he was awarded the John Bates Clark Medal, which recognizes the most influential economist in America under the age of 40. More recently, he was named one of TIME magazine's "100 People Who Shape Our World." Levitt received his B.A. from Harvard University in 1989, his Ph.D. from M.I.T. in 1994, and has taught at the University of Chicago since 1997. He coauthored the bestselling book Freakonomics with Stephen J. Dubner. SUPERFreakonomics will be available for purchase and signing after the program.
