The Soviet Collapse, the Dangers of Nostalgia, and the Lessons for Modern Russia
with
His Excellency Yegor Gaidar, economist, former acting prime minister of Russia, and director of the Institute for the Economy in Transition, Moscow
What lessons can be learned from the collapse of the Soviet Union, and what dangers does today’s Russia face in light of that history? Dr. Yegor Gaidar, who served as acting prime minister of Russia in the Yeltsin government, has been part of the history of the collapse of the Soviet Union and its transformation into Russia. He also served as deputy chairman of the Russian Federation in charge of economic policy in 1991 and was the minister of economy and finance in 1992.
Gaidar has held a number of other high offices since then, including serving as a member of parliament from 1999 through 2004. He is currently director of the Institute for the Economy in Transition, cochairman of the Executive Committee of the Union of Rightist Forces political party, and vice president of the International Democrat Union. Gaidar received his Ph.D. in economics in 1980 from Moscow State University and has written a number of monographs and papers. His new book, Collapse of an Empire, will be available for purchase and signing at the program.
