Emma Sanderson joined the Chicago Council on Global Affairs in 2021 as a communications and research assistant on US Foreign Policy. In this role, she supports and conducts original research, analysis, and writing focused on the “restraint” approach to American foreign policy. This approach favors diplomatic engagement and seeks to limit the deployment and use of military force to the defense of core US national security interests. Sanderson also develops outreach methods through social media campaigns, infographics, and video products to engage Americans on key US foreign policy issues.

Prior to joining the Council full-time, Sanderson interned from 2020-2021 with the Council’s Pritzker Forum on Global Cities. She researched US-Somalia foreign policy and counterterrorism operations in sub-Saharan Africa as a fellow with the John Quincy Adams Society and received professional training in diplomatic tradecraft with the Washington International Diplomatic Academy. Sanderson graduated with a BA in Spanish and international affairs from the University of Colorado-Boulder in 2021.
